Description
Toko Shinoda (Japanese, 1913-2021). Lithograph on paper titled "Spring", ca. 1980, depicting loose abstract Sumi-e brushstrokes. Pencil signed, titled, and numbered 25/30 along the lower left.
Shinoda is best known for her abstract Sumi paintings and prints created by fusing traditional East Asian calligraphy techniques with Abstract Expressionism. She pushed the boundaries of traditional calligraphy and introduced abstraction and dynamism to the art that placed her at the forefront of her field.
