A collection of early metalwork comprising five bronze mortars and two brass candlesticks
16th /17th century and later
Comprising a small English mortar of flared form on circular foot, the foot cast with two coats of arms for Charles I;
a small mortar of flared form with ring handle, cast with vertical spiral strut with cross tops and oak leaf spay inscribed small o above P, then GIVA(combined VA)PE, then CO;
a small mortar with moulded flared top with animal head handles, the cast with twin helmeted warrior and scrolling motif;
a small mortar of bellied form with three angular struts, and flared rim, with O and VA;
a larger mortar with ribbed flared rim, the body cast with scrolling m pierced by a staff on the left interspaced by scrolling arrow head dividers;
the brass candlesticks comprising a capstan example with hexagonal pierced nozzle, perhaps Spanish;
and an octagonal base brass candlestick with turned stem and cylindrical pierced nozzle, the largest: 12.5cm (4 1/2in) high, 15cm (5 1/2in) diameter (7)
