STAR SAPPHIRE, RUBY, PEARL, DIAMOND AND ENAMEL BROOCH
The Holbeinesque quatrefoil clasp, circa 1860, decorated in polychrome enamel with floral motifs, accented by cushion-shaped diamonds and four 5.5mm pearls, with a later star sapphire sugarloaf cabochon and cushion-shaped ruby cluster to the centre, diamonds approximately 1.95 carats total, pearls untested, later detachable brooch pin, length 4.0cm

The star sapphire is of a light greyish blue hue, displaying asterism in the form of a six-ray star with some eye visible colour zoning. A brown surface reaching vein visible near the base on one side under 10 X magnification. Rubies are well matched medium pinkish red hues with a few natural mineral inclusions and abrasions to facets/facet edges visible under 10 X magnification. Pearls are off-round, oval and drop shapes with white body colours, a range of green, rose and silver overtones of varying intensities and high lustres. Skins all very smooth with only minor surface blemishes including a few shallow dimples and pin pricks visible under 10 X magnification. Pearls untested. Diamonds estimated SI1-3 clarity. Diamonds difficult to assess for colour owing to impact of yellow mount but estimated J-L colour. Polychrome enamel with a few small eye visible losses and some abrasions visible under 10 X magnification. Unmarked/untested yellow metal with some surface wear and areas of discolouration visible to reverse. Later detachable pin fitting of a slightly rosier hue. Clasp probably formed frontispiece for a bracelet, converting to a brooch and original centre may have been a large pearl or diamond. Overall in good condition. Gross weight approx. 33.0 grams.
