Description
Garrison; France, Napoleon III, c. 1870.
Gilt bronze and enamel.
With Paris machinery. 8 days.
Measurements: 47 x 67 x 14 cm.
Set of clock accompanied by two candelabra with four arms of light. The clock is supported on four legs with stylised leaf-shaped finials in the case of the front ones, as the back ones have a different design. The base is rectangular with protruding sides, as they are surmounted by upright borders inside which an enamelled decoration reveals the bust, conceived as a sculpture on its pedestal, of two young women wearing attributes reminiscent of classical antiquity, such as the theatre mask, the cup and the serpent. The central body supported on the base has a truncated cone-shaped structure that is also ornamented with an enamelled area in the centre, also featuring the bust of a woman. The watch case is located in the upper part, with a golden dial on which the Roman numerals in black stand out. Bordering the dial, the bronze structure is highly decorated with enamelled cartouches depicting two ladies and, in the upper part, various signs of the zodiac. Finally, the piece is topped with a crest crowned by what appears to be a theatre mask. The four-light candlesticks have a similar ornamentation based on the contrast between the bronze and the enamel and the classically inspired ornamentation.
