Description
At least 8 meters long. 16.5 cm. high.
A unique and interesting manuscript on paper, written in the form of a scroll more than eight meters long, containing the Tikkun Leil Shavuot. Written in a scribal hand, perhaps Yemenite, and later embellished with watercolor designs and motifs. The phenomenon of writing a Tikkun Leil Shavuot as a scroll is unusual and extremely rare. According to the custom of the Kabbalists, on the night of Shavuot one should read the opening and concluding chapters of each parshah of the Bible. According to some opinions, the beginning and end of the massechtot of the Mishnah are also read. It is believed that these readings elevate the reader as if he had studied these books in their entirety. The unique scroll before us includes the passages from the Chumash and part of the prophets.
The more than 8 meters of this scroll are comprised of numerous paper sheets, sewn together by hand. Colorful geometric ornaments and interesting illustrations were added beneath the text columns of the first half of the scroll, and include birds, peacocks and roosters. These ornaments and illustrations were probably added in the early 20th century, using watercolors, and adorn the scroll's first several meters. The scroll is housed in a half-leather box in the shape of a book, which looks to be several decades old.
A rare and exceptional hand-written scroll.
