While the exact identity of this particular member is unclear, the family includes prominent members such as Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, KG (1801–1885), a prominent politician, social reformer and philanthropist. Called the "Poor Mans Earl", he campaigned for better working conditions, reform to lunacy laws, education and the limitation of child labor, and the abolition of slavery.
