Item Details
Description
North America, midwestern United States, Ohio, Cincinnati, ca. 1919 CE. A striking sword from one of the oldest fraternal orders in the United States - the Independent Order of Odd Fellows -comprised of a carbon steel blade and scabbard with gilt brass hilt and decoration featuring the coat of arms of a sheep and lion rampant above the words "PAX AUT BELLUM" - Latin for "peace or war." Nickel silver motifs adorn the slender blade, featuring a shield with the names "Patmil" and "Justuni" as well as the name "G.F. Bastian" and "CINCINNATI / REGALIA CO. / CINCINNATI, O." Below, the elaborate hilt presents a wrapped grip with a curved cross-guard and a globe-form pommel. The scabbard is also intricately embellished with gilt brass areas of abstract, scrolling motifs with the number "19" inscribed, likely denoting the year. Size (w/ scabbard): 35.6" L x 4.4" W (90.4 cm x 11.2 cm); (w/o scabbard): 34.1" L (86.6 cm); blade: 28" L (71.1 cm)
