A Romanesque Style Carved Red Hardstone Bocca Di Leone (Lion's Mouth)

Italian, possibly 17th century, carved red marble, shaped pediment with Romanesque head and open mouth relief, having carved latin inscription "DENONTIE SECRETE ACLI Ec. RRs RI /INOVISTRORI SOPRA L'OFFITIO / DAL SAL / 6 R."
Approximately 22 1/2 x 35 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
Complaint boxes, or Bocche Di Leone, were hung on the facades of a building and provided a way for citizens to file complaints or otherwise communicate with the government.
