Description
Georges Barbier (French,1882-1932). Art deco period watercolor and ink on paper depicting a draped female figure. The lower panel, also watercolor and ink on paper, depicting mermaid figures. Both mounted on a hand painted gilt embossed board. Vertical sheet is signed and dated, upper left, G. Barbier & 1923. Possibly an original design for a book cover. Barbier is noted for art deco fashion magazine illustration, set and costume design for theatre, film and ballet, and book illustration. Characterized by a refinement and elegance which epitomized the art deco era, his early work took the form of fashion illustrations for such magazines as La Gazette du Bon Ton (for which he also wrote), Modes et manières d’aujourd’hui, Fémina, Costumes parisiens, Vogue and the Journal des dames et des modes. He later produced designs for stage sets and theatre costumes, for Folies Bergère, alongside Erte, as well as designs for fabrics, fans and wallpaper. Aside from his design work, Barbier also wrote influential articles and essays on the topic of art and design. Some of his most renowned works are illustrations for books such as Fetes Galantes by Paul Verlaine and works by Charles Baudelaire. Dimensions: smaller sheet, 6 1/2" high x 4 1/2" wide. embossed board - 14 3/4" high x 12 1/2" wide (widest point). Frame: 22 1/2" high x 18 1/4" wide. Conditon: Very good. Some very minor wear to gilt embossed, raised areas of board. Nicely framed in period moulding, having very minor wear appropriate for age.
