Description
Indo-Portuguese Goa Carved Bust of a Monk, 16th/17th C. Depicting a man's head with tonsure haircut that left the top bald to emulate St. Paul, but the sides intact to abide by Leviticus 19:28 from the Old Testament, which says: "You must not cut off the hair at the sides of your head..." On stepped wooden base. Size: 2'' x 1.5'' x 1.5'' (5 x 4 x 4 cm). Height on base: 3.5" (9 cm). Provenance: Sylvia and Philip Chaplain Collection, New Hampshire.
