Item Details
Description
An 1899 Stanley Stanhope Model No. 1. "Locomobile" by the Locomobile Company of America. This popular vehicle quickly became known as the "Stanley Steamer". It is one of the simplest and purest representations of ingenuity in the horseless carriage era. When the vehicle debuted, the company advertisement in Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly boasted, "it makes the ownership of a "rig" possible to thousands of people who cannot keep a horse because of the difficulty and cost of maintenance and the expense of a coachman". This vehicle was touted as the answer to the horse and buggy. Most interesting, however, is that this tiny carriage is driven by a quiet but powerful two-cylinder steam engine. According to the literature, "it can climb a 36 percent grade...weighs less than 400 pounds, is odorless and noiseless in use". This vehicle was the centerpiece of the Horseless Carriage Museum, Fenelon Falls, Ontario until its recent closure. Although the boiler was rebuilt, the car has not been in operation since the museum founder's illness in 2019. The curators spared no expense to outfit this vehicle with hard to find accessories. It is equipped with a brass, period correct "never out" headlamp with matching carriage lights; a sight glass to measure water level; twin 2.5" Locomobile steam gauges on driver and passenger side; a bicycle bell on tiller to warn pedestrians and animals of an approaching vehicle; a bermuda (foot pedal) bell; and a four-chime steam whistle that hearkens the grin of many parades during this vehicles storied lifespan. This is a rare opportunity to own something remarkable.
