American. 1900s. Painted metal. Requires globe. Carbon arc fixtures provided bright lighting for factories, institutions and stores during an era prior to available electric light. Carbon arc lighting was notoriously dangerous and was the known cause of numerous building fires around the turn-of-the-century.
