Item Details
Description
A thick volume containing: 1. Horeb. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch. First Edition. Altona, 1837 Horeb. The source for each and every mitzvah in the Torah, the reasons for the mitzvahs, and how the reason for the mitzvah can be found in each detail of the mitzvah, through the latest halachic authorities. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch. Altona, 1837. First edition. This is the author's first work. It was prepared in 1835, when the author was only 27 years old, and still the rabbi of Oldenburg. There was no Jewish publisher willing to take the risk of publishing this great work, given the grim condition of the Jews in Germany. He therefore turned to a non-Jewish publisher in Altona who was unfamiliar with the Jewish market. He too was concerned about his finances, so he asked Rabbi Hirsch to first publish a small compilation as a trial. Therefore, Rabbi Hirsch published his famous book Nineteen Letters on Judaism in Altona in 1836, and given its success, the publisher agreed to publish this work, Horeb, in 1837. The goal of the book was not to adjudicate practical halachah, but to draw youth to Torah and Jewish tradition, but over time, the book became German Jewry's "Shulchan Aruch." The book was written in German at a high literary level, with many quotes in Hebrew. Rabbi Hirsch called his book "an attempt to explain Jewish doctrine." The book was translated over the years into many languages and editions. This first edition is extraordinarily rare. 2. Igrot Tzafon Altona, 1836 – First Edition. ''Neunzehn Briefe über Judenthum“, Nineteen Letters on Judaism, in German, the first book written by the fighter on behalf of Orthodox Judaism and Germany Jewry, Rabbi Shimshon Refael Hirsch. Published under the pseudonym “Ben Uziel”, the work takes the form of a dialogue between “Binyamin”, a young Jew struggling and debating life’s complexities, and “Rabbi Naftali”, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi who straightens him out and shows him the derech. This work was the breakthrough of Rashar Hirsch’s philosophy, because of which he became famous and his philosophy became a benchmark of Germany Jewry for the maintenance of the orthodox lifestyle in the face of reformation in the 19th century. Repaired title page, stains, overall good condition. 3. Naftulei Naftali – Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch –First Edition, Altona 1838. Rare This book was written by Rabbi Hirsch when he was thirty years old, and in it he refutes all the foundations of the reform, which distort the words of the Torah. The publication of the book caused a severe war on the part of the reformers against it. 4. A pamphlet in German, Altona 1844. Stamp of Sigmund Brill, Budapest. Overall in good condition, detached pages, water stains. text block split in 3, damaged binding.
