Hardy's only historical novel, set in Weymouth during the Napoleonic wars. Originally published as a serial in Good Words magazine from January-December 1880. First state binding of all volumes, with double rather than triple rules on the lower cover and dots between "Smith" and "Elder" centered rather than on the base line. ;Purdy pp. 31-35. Sadleir 1115 (binding "A"). Bookseller label at foot of front pastedown to Vol. I.

Condition

Light rubbing at ends of slightly leaning and darkened spines, mild soiling to cloth, with a few just slightly bumped corners; light foxing to edges and endleaves, bindings shaken with some internal cracking; very good.
