Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century. A fine brass kyeezee or gong of a triangular form with two flat sides and a hole drilled near the top for suspension. Resembling the silhouette of a robed Buddha sitting cross-legged in meditation, this musical instrument is vertically symmetrical with a slightly rounded bottom, curled up corners, six protruding decorative tabs forming four tiers, and a rounded cap. Often used for meditation, the kyeezee produces a piercing bell-like tone when struck and a warbling effect when spun. This one is engraved on one face with characters in the Burmese alphabet. A beautiful piece of devotional and religious art! Size: 16.125" L x .75" W x 11.125" H (41 cm x 1.9 cm x 28.3 cm)
