Description
Chinese Republic Period enamel decorated vase with by artist Wang Shaowei (also named Tingzui, active 1862-1908). Vase of ovoid form with splayed rim and elephant form handles. Displaying depictions of a monkey perched on a branch with outstretched arm holding a stick. This scene is set above a man on horseback watching the monkey above. Alternate side is decorated with a landscape scene of a home in the clearing of hills. With a signature and calligraphy panel above. Wang Shaowei was employed for a period of time in the imperial factory, and specialized in painting using qianjing enamel. Take note that he was known specifically for his paintings of monkeys. From a Port Monmouth, NJ estate. Dimensions: vase measures approx. 17.375" h.
Condition
One edge chip that continues to 4.5" to 5.5" hairline (interior and exterior dimensions). Several additional edge chips and/or abrasions that result in losses to the gilt decoration. Minor enamel losses. Light surface scratches and dings/dents.
