Description
Political
1868 Broadside for the Presidential Candidacy of Horatio Seymour titled: "An Appeal to the Union Men of the South"
1868 Presidential Campaign Broadside, "An Appeal to the Union Men of the South", the author accused U.S. Grant of allowing "Negroes to have supremacy over white men at the South, and Grant and Congress to be supreme over all.", Very Fine.
This Political Broadside measures 12" x 9" and was printed in deep black typeset on light cream-colored wove period paper. Several horizontal and vertical folds are present, with some expert archival tape repair on the blank reverse to prevent further fold splits. Published after "... the day of surrender...", this historic Broadside appeals to Southerners to support the candidacy of Horatio Seymour for President because, in part: "[He] is a safe many for the reason he wants to reestablish the Government as it was." His opponent, Grant, on the other hand, "... is an unsafe man for the reason that he is seeking to destroy the Government as it was, and to establish on its ruins a government unknown to the people and dangerous to their liberties." The author accused Grant of allowing: "Negroes to have supremacy over white men at the South, and Grant and Congress to be supreme over all." Finally, "Let us vote for Seymour and Blair without hesitation. It is safe to do so. They are the true Union candidates; and let it not be said of us that Confederate soldiers and officers are better Union men than we are." A very interesting and attractive political campaign item relative to Reconstruction and the restoration of the Union after the Civil War.
