Partially Silvered Three Cents "Drake's Plantation Bitters"
EP-42, HB-101, S-71, Reed-DR03. Three Cents. Drake's Plantation Bitters. Partially Silvered Choice About New.
Rated as Rarity-2 (80-100 Known) according to Fred Reed. The bright fresh vivid red 3 George Washington 1861 Civil War period U.S. postage issue Stamp is extremely well centered and looks as it did on the day it was encased in 1862. The case is defect-free with a natural medium chestnut color with some deeper tone on the reverse. All legends are sharp in detail and nicely highlighted by the remaining light coat of original Silvering, which is somewhat heavier within the protection of the legends. EAHA sold another example of EP-42 in our EAHA Auction, February 10, 2007 Lot 791 which was graded Choice About New, selling at $1,062. This current example appears somewhat superior.
As an interesting side note... Encased Postage expert and reference book author Fred Reed, provides information that a contemporary chemist tested the Drake's Bitters and found it contained 38.24% alcohol! The "ST. 1860 X" in its legend refers to St. Croix Rum (the main ingredient of this "Bitters") and the year 1860 is when Drake acquired rights to the product from his former partner. This cataloger wonders how it tastes.
