    About the artist:

Illustrator, author, and teacher, Howard Pyle is often regarded as the Father of American Illustration. He wrote and illustrated dozens of books, largely fairy tales, fables, and other stories, most notably the book, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. He was also a gifted instructor. After teaching at Drexel Institute of Art and for six years, he started his own school, the Brandywine School. Illustrator, author, and teacher. Born on March 5, 1853, in Wilmington, Delaware. Sometimes called the Father of American Illustration, Howard Pyle wrote and illustrated dozens of books, largely fairy tales, fables, and other stories. As a child, he read many adventure stories and tall tales, such as Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Instead of going to college, Pyle studied art in Philadelphia for three years. Some of his early works were illustrations and stories for magazines and other periodicals. He moved to New York City in 1876 and struggled to make ends meet until he sold an illustrated article to Harper’s Weekly. After returning to Wilmington in 1880, he began working on some of his most memorable books. One such project, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883), proved especially popular. Nearly every inch of the book was created by Pyle - the stories, the illustrations, and the type of lettering used. He went on to illustrate dozens of other works, his own stories as well as those by other writers. Pyle was also a gifted instructor. After working teaching illustration at Drexel Institute of Art from 1894 to 1900, Pyle started his own art and illustration school, which became known the Brandywine School. Some of his most notable students included N. C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish. Howard Pyle died on November 9, 1911, in Florence, Italy. He was married to Anne Poole, and the couple had seven children together. [From the Biography website.]

  • Condition
Bold pigment as discovered in the collection, light flaking throughout gouache highlights to clouds, old paper backing to one inch horizontal tear at middle left edge away from image, scattered condition issues to bottom one inch of paper sheet, see detail images, exceptional original estate folio discovery. Unmatted and unframed. Additionally, the state of preservation of these original illustration drawings that are on average over 65 years old is quite exceptional. Very, very few have any creases, tears or losses to the paper and the ink has remained uniformly vivid thanks to the family’s dry flat storage. Given that these were working drawings from which prints were made the expected edge annotations, highlightings, inscriptions, pasted labels, tack holes, staples, glue residues and scattered corrections can be found variously on the examples as illustrated in the photographs. These all add to the authenticity and immediacy of the Wartime newsroom and pressroom atmosphere, serving to reinforce the iconic status of these rare surviving testimonies to the political illustrator’s art. In a few examples additional notations have been made in the description section of the catalogue text for significant damage, however the condition sensitive collector is encouraged to contact our sale expert for additional lot details in advance of the auction date.
