Description
An antique painting by Wynand Geraedts offers oil on canvas Stations of the Cross scene of the Division of Robes; monogrammed and dated as photographed (part of the set in Lots 6194-6200, with Lot 6194 having a full signature), 1924.**Additional in the set listed separately**Measures- 38.25'' H x 48'' W x 1.25'' D; 43.5'' x 33.5'' sightBiography:Wijnandus Aloisius (Wijnand) Geraedts ( Swalmen , June 5, 1883 - Leiden, May 19, 1958 ) was a Dutch painter.Geraedts was educated in Antwerp and Munich and then worked in Germany, France, Italy and the United States in addition to the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, the Roman Catholic Church was his main client, which is why many churches have frescoes , stations of the cross and oil paintings. For example, he painted the Stations of the Cross in the Sint-Josephkerk in Roosendaal, the Sint-Willibrorduskerk in Oegstgeest , the Sint-Martinuskerk in Etten, the Sint-Werenfriduskerk in Zieuwent, the Sint-Jozefkerkin Zandberg in Drenthe and the Sint-Josephkerk in his hometown of Leiden. His painting of the "H. Virgin of Welberg" became controversial: an unveiled, blond-haired and angel-like Virgin Mary, who had been given this shape on the instructions of Janske Gorissen, a stigmatized seer from Welberg, Steenbergen municipality. Geraedt's painting hung in the parish church during the heyday of the local Marian cult, which was later terminated after an official ecclesiastical investigation as the result of false mysticism and popular belief that had gotten out of hand. The painting by Geraedts was removed from the parish church and is now kept in the bishop's palace in Breda. He was a member of the Sint Lucas artists' association in Amsterdam.Wijnand's son Pieter Geraedts was also a painter. He was married to Theresia Antonia Christina van Dongen.
