James Carter is known for his for his airbrush acrylic paintings, serigraphs and lithographs. Some of his paintings have written text, and his style combines carefully controlled trompe l'oeil and abstract Surrealist influences. He was born in Port Chester, New York in 1948. He received his BA from Silvermine College of Art in 1970, and earned a BFA at The Maryland Institute of Art in 1972. The painter has been primarily a resident of Southbury, Connecticut. Contemporary American artist James Carter combines the dream images of surrealism with the techniques of super-realism to create still-lifes. By placing real objects in abstract environments, Carter can make them dissolve, fade, float or move as he wants. His acrylic with airbrush paintings and his serigraphs project a fresh view of familiar situations. He began working with lithography in college, and turned to exploring serigraphy. Many artists use serigraphy to produce solid blocks of color in their work. but Carter applies the techniques of painting, including airbrush, directly to his screens, to produce a wide range of textural and tonal effects.Carter studied at the Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut, and the Maryland Institute of Art, and resides in Southbury, Connecticut.
