Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of tall form with a bowl-shaped lower body, a detailed upper body shaped like a charming owl, a thick, stirrup-shaped handle, and a wide spout with a dense, everted rim. The adorable avian creature presents broadly incised striations across its feathered body, its head turned over its right shoulder to peer out with enormous hemispherical eyes, and all decorated with applied cinnabar pigment that stands out against the gray-brown color of the body. Size: 6.7" W x 9" H (17 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
