Description
Susanne Nyberg (American, b. 1953). "Sedona View" oil on canvas, ca. 1980s. Signed "S. Nyberg" on lower right. A stunning landscape painting of Sedona, an Arizona desert near Flagstaff, created by American artist Susanne Nyberg. The composition is delineated in Nyberg's signature realistic yet expressive style with meticulous palette knife work. Notice the dramatic pink desert light illuminating the mountains perhaps at sunrise or sunset, as well as the more diffuse light over the desert brush delineated in various shades of sage green in the foreground. According to Nyberg's artist statement, "Susanne Nyberg’s artistic inspiration comes from the Arizona mountains where she lives. Whether she is painting realistic landscapes, or abstract paintings that incorporate minerals and gems mined from the mountains, the natural beauty of her surroundings compels her to create art." Size: 15.875" L x 19.875" W (40.3 cm x 50.5 cm)
Susanne Nyberg was raised in Massachusetts, later moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Arizona. In Boston, she studied at the Art Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and in Washington, D.C., she studied at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. This said, perhaps her greatest influence was artist Bill Freeman, the prominent Western landscape painter whom she met when she moved to Arizona early in her career. Freeman would become her mentor and close friend. Nyberg is best known for her impressively realistic oil and palette knife plein air landscape paintings. She and her husband have lived in the scenic Arizona desert in a small town called Carefree for most of their lives.
