North America, Southern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A large hand-knapped chert stone tool with a wide cutting edge and a narrow butt end. The chert has nice beige and creamy gray hues. This hefty tool could have served a variety of tasks such as cutting, scraping hides, or digging, and it may have been attached to a wooden handle. An old label on the verso marks the discovery of the tool in 1936, a great find! Size: 8.75" L x 4" W (22.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier

Repaired from two pieces with infill along break line. Old inventory label on surface. Some chips to peripheries not from knapping process. Smooth and polished surface along blade edge.
