Description
Jonathan Bastian (American, 20th century). Two wooden folk art sculptures, 20th century. David and Goliath is signed and dated 1990 on the lower right corner of the base. A fascinating pair of hand-carved and hand-painted wooden folk art scenes. First is a dramatic depiction of David and Goliath by Jonathan Bastian. The bearded David is presented in the nude, bravely raising his fists at Goliath who has already been knocked down to a seated position. Both figures are mounted upon a tiered base, the upper flat surface of which is sponge-painted in green to represent grass. Next is a gathering country folk. One woman holds a white lamb in her arms, while the other holds a red flower and a basket. The man in a grey suit and bowler hat is holding his cow's chain leash in one hand and a cane in the other, while facing a bearded man dressed in black. Size of David & Goliath: 9.75" L x 19.375" W x 14.75" H (24.8 cm x 49.2 cm x 37.5 cm)
