Remarkable 1807 Newspaper Featuring Prohibition of Importation of Slaves
Newspaper, “The Balance and Columbian Repository”, No. 22, Vol. VI, 8pp, 9.25” x 11.5”, Hudson, June 2, 1807. Binding separated at the bottom, not affecting any text; scattered foxing throughout; else, very good condition.
The highlight of this issue is a lengthy 6-column article spanning 3 pages, “An Act / To prohibit the importation of SLAVES into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States, from and after the first day of January, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eight.” It is approved by President Thomas Jefferson on March 2, 1807, and signed in print, "TH : JEFFERSON."
Additional content of interest includes an article on dueling, for which the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church passed a resolution declaring, “the utter abhorrence of the practice of duelling (sic)…as originating from the malevolent dispositions of the human heart…as a remnant of Gothic barbarism…”
The Balance and Columbian Repository (1801-1807) was a weekly newspaper in Hudson, New York. The publishers were Ezra Sampson (1749-1823), George Chittenden (1776-1845), and Harry Croswell (1778-1858). It contained moral and religious essays, poetry, agricultural news, literary notices, speeches and addresses, proceedings of the New York legislature and Congress, legal notices, and advertisements.
