Description
Andrew Johnson Endorsed Paycheck Issued by the Treasury of the United States.
A partially printed "Treasurer of the U.S" check, Washington D.C., February 28, 1861, made payable to "A. Johnson”, and signed by Secretary of the Senate Asbury Dinkins. measuring 7.5" x 3", mounted onto a larger sheet of card stock, 11.5" x 5.5", with a window cut out so that Johnson's signature is visible on the verso. The check has light creasing and soiling. A cut cancellation goes through Johnson's bold signature and showcases no loss of paper.
The check was likely issued to Johnson for compensation for services rendered as U.S. Senator from Tennessee during the Secession Winter for a payment of $510.21. The sheet displays a quote by the future President which reads "Thrift sweetens the bread of the workingman; it makes him conscious of his own cause, his own safety, his own dignity."
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
