Description
The scandalous Miss Nesbit, who was "The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing" for her affair with the greatest architect of his day, Stanford White, of McKim, Mead & White. She is 16 in this 1901 photo. After marrying the unstable millionaire Harry K. Thaw, she confessed to their depredations, and Thaw shot White in the head while the famous man enjoyed a show in the rooftop cabaret of his masterpiece Madison Square Garden. Eickemeyer was one of the first to photograph Nesbit, as her career escalated before the 1906 murder. (Thaw was ultimately freed). This gelatin nitrate photo called "Evelyn Nesbit with Chrysanthemum" began to define intimate celebrity portraiture. Originally tipped to a magazine page by the upper corners (now torn away), the size of the edition was determined by the issue subscription. 7 1/4" x 9 1/8" image, printed to the edge of the sheet . India ink signed lower right edge.
