Considered a second generation Hudson River School painter, Duncanson was the greatest African-American painter of the ante-bellum age and the first to attain international fame. From Seneca County, New York, he ended his days in Cincinnati, Ohio, having worked his dramatic landscapes in the Upper Penninsula (MI) and the American West.
