Description
Rare 42" Trotting Horse having a molded copper body, circa 1880, structurally original, with an evolved mustard yellow paint. The paint is crazed, dry, and probably 100 years old. The directionals appear to be original to the vane and are shown in the L.W. Cushing & Sons, Waltham, Mass. 1883 catalogue #75, page 7, with the directionals on page 20. Overall height on stand is 64 1/2", the horse is 42" long.Dexter was considered the world's premier trotter, dominating races between 1864 and 1867. Much information is available from Currier & Ives prints, winner of 46 of 50 races, and pulled Presidential Candidate Ulysses S. Grant for publicity.Reference: "The Art of the Winds" by Shaw, page 145; this weathervane is on the front of the L.W. Cushing & Sons Catalogue/Price List and page 155, 1869; showed this weathervane on the 'Trade Card' with Special Order "Buffalo Park", famous trotter track of the day, NY; "Yankee Weathervanes" by Myrna Kaye, pgs. 176-177.
