154-155 A.D. Rome (and British?) mint. Obv: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS IIII legend with laureate bust right. Rev: BRITANNIA COS IIII legend with Britannia seated left on rock in attitude of despair, shield and vexillum behind; SC in exergue. RIC 934; BMC 1971; Sear 4296 12.05 grams. (). Property of a Cambridgeshire, UK, gentleman. An early depiction of the personification of Britannia; the poor quality of striking and British find-spot for many of these coins suggest that some may have been struck in Britain and it has been supposed that this might have occurred near to the northern frontier.
