Description
19th century A.D. Electrotype replica, original coin struck under Laomedon, copying an issue from the Ake mint, dated year 27. Obv: head of Herakles right, wearing lionskin headdress. Rev: ALEXANDROY legend with Zeus seated left, right leg drawn back, holding eagle and sceptre; date -I O (Phoenician ‘K) over |||| ||| // in left field (normally with III III //). Edge: with letter R punched in for Robert Ready, the electrotyper. See Price 3265 Type 2; Ashmolean HCR23599 for original coin type. 12.43 grams. (). Property of a Cambridgeshire, UK, gentleman. Accompanied by two previous cataloguing tickets. Robert Cooper Ready (1811-1901) was hired by the British Museum from 1859 to make exact electrotype copies of coins, medals and seals for study and display purposes and some of these were gifted or sold to museums and collectors around the world; this practice was continued into the 20th century by his sons Charles and August until 1931; most are marked to the edge.
