Germany, 17th century A.D. A lead medallion bearing a stylised figure wearing a turban on one face, with 'MACH-OMET' in the field and 'M[O]DV : SOLT : NICHT ANDER : {G}OETTER : HABE + N [You shall not have other gods outside of me]:' legend; the other side with Christ on the cross with two flowers and 'WORDEN : D[VR?] CH : SEINE : WVNDEN : S[ ]NT : WIR : HEIL' [By His Wounds We Are Healed] legend; pierced for suspension. Cf. Shalem, A., Di Cesare, M., Coffey, H., Saviello, A., Constructing the Image of Muhammad in Europe, Berlin-Boston, 2013, for discussion. 9.76 grams, 41 mm wide (1 5/8 in.). Acquired 1960s-1990s. From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister. Accompanied by a handwritten cataloguing note. This is a kind of token made for the purpose of religious propaganda against the Turk invasion of Europe, stopped by the Polish King Jan III Sobieski and the other Christian leaders in Vienna on 11 September 1683.
