Item Details
Description
23rd-20th century B.C. A mixed group of three large bronze seals with compartmented designs and scalloped edges, each accompanied by a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (41) 'Compartmented Stamp Seal of Bronze, 68 x 68 x 25mm. This is round and flat with a V-shaped handle on the back. The design is a pattern: in the centre a small circle, around that a square of zig-zag lines within a larger circle, and six rays radiate from that larger circle to the largest circle, which is the inside of the outermost band, which has an undulating outer edge. This is a seal from west-central Asia, c. 2200-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition save for one small spot of damage to the outer band. The design is a representation of either the sun or a major star.'; (V-874) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 73 x 70 x 22m. This has a round flat face with scalloped outer rim, flat back, and handle of angular type in the middle of the back. The design is both compartmented and open-work. In the middle are two concentric circles joined to the outer band by four struts spaced evenly around the circle. between these struts are four 'tridents' also serving as struts. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a large seal, and a fine example of its kind. It is in good condition save for some denting of the outer rim.'; (U-637) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 73 x 71 x 17mm. This is round with scalloped outer edge. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a rosette with six petals, each petal joined to an outer band of 13 scallops by the tip and by two struts. both face and back are flat, with angular suspension loop in the middle of the back. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c.2300-2000 B.C. It is a large and fine example of its kind, and is in quite good condition, the outer rim in part being broken off. The metal has been conserved.' 193 grams, 69 mm (2 3/4 in.). Acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Signo collection, property of a West London businessman. Collection numbers U-637, V-874, 41, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
