Description
6th-5th century B.C. A carved terracotta (argilla rosata) finial formed as a ram's head with spiral horns; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. a very similar head of ram on a terracotta from the ornamentation of the Portonaccio temple, 510 B.C., in the Museum of Villa Giulia, Roma, see A. Winter, N.A., 'Soluzioni degli angoli frontonali nei tetti etruschi di VII e VI secolo, a.C.' in Acme, 134, 2013, pp.139-156, fig.9. 123 grams total, 68 mm (90 mm high including stand) (2 7/8 in. (3 1/2 in.)). Acquired 1970s-1996. Property of a North American collector. London collection, 2016. The piece was probably a handle of a pot for votive offers. This proud animal with magnificent curving horns seems to epitomise the essence of the ram, sacred animal to Ares, the god of war (the Latin name for ram is Aries). [No Reserve]
