Description
Circa 8th-7th century B.C. A very large bronze fibula with rectangular catch plate, long curving bow with two bands of incised circumferential lines; pin absent; accompanied by a custom-made display stand. 415 grams total, 13.5 cm long (5 1/4 in.). Private New York collection. Artemis Gallery, Colorado, USA. Accompanied by an illustrated certificate of authenticity issued by Artemis Gallery. Private Australian collection. Accompanied by a copy of the previous collector's cataloguing document. Turfa (Catalogue of the Etruscan Gallery, p. 9) noted that simple fibulae, influenced by Mycenaean Greek types, appeared in the Italian archipelago during the Late Bronze Age; fibulae with curved bows and plain catches were widespread in Etruria as early as the Final Bronze Age (Villanovan Period).
