Description:
Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline. 43.5x49.5 cm (17¼x19½").
The rare second state of Hondius' important map of the polar region, replacing Mercator's polar map and incorporating knowledge gained by the English in their search for a Northwest Passage to Asia. The North American cartography is based on Henry Briggs' depiction of Hudson Bay. Numerous discoveries are shown including those of Frobisher, Davis, Baffin, Hudson, Button, Foxe and James. There are several Dutch names in Labrador, many appearing for the first time on this map. To the west is America Septentrionalia Incognita. The only difference between this state and the even more rare first "proof" state is the title cartouche, which was previously blank but now has Hondius' imprint; there is a second blank dedication cartouche at right. The more common third state of the plate had a surround of engraved whaling scenes added, which were present on following states as well. English text on verso, as is the case with all known examples of states 1 and 2. Burden 246.
