Description
19th century Russian icon.
"Virgin Odighitria".
Painting on wood.
Lack of polychromy. In need of restoration. Ancient xylophages. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.
Measurements: 35 x 26 cm.
One of the best known motifs in Marian iconology is that of the Virgin Odighitria, or "the one who shows the way". The standard figure shows the Mother of God with the Child in her arms, generally on the left, while her right hand points to her, showing her to the spectator. The Virgin's head is bent towards her son. The name Virgin Odighitria is extended to all icons in which the Virgin extends her right hand in her gesture of "pointing the way".
