"The Virgin of Andronicus".
Painting on wood.
Paint loss. In need of restoration. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.
Measurements: 24,5 x 17,5 cm .
Greek icon from the 19th century, painted on wood in gilt with chiselled details, representing The Virgin of Andronicus.
The original Andronikov icon (Andronikovskaya) is also known by the names Monemvasia and Greek. The icon depicts the Mother of God without the Child. There is a bleeding wound on the right side of the Mother of God's neck. According to legend, Andronikova is one of the icons painted by the apostle and evangelist Luke. The icon belonged to the domestic shrines of Emperor Andronicus III Palaiologos (after whom it was named). According to the earliest surviving documentary evidence of the icon, in 1347 Andronicus donated it to the Monemvasian monastery in Morea, where it remained until the beginning of the 19th century.
