Description
A pair of paintings in the traditional style of the well-known 18th century Peruvian school which, from the city of Cuzco quickly widespread and became the ultimate expression of the Andean Baroque, this latter being characterized by the progressive departure from the European manners to a local version plenty of unreal vegetal motifs, distorted perspectives and fabled elements. This gave birth to the Angelic series divided into three groups: The Hierarchies, the Archangels and the Musician Angels. Ours fall into the second group, portraying two archangels wearing lavish regal vests and embracing rifles. This style, also called “crossbred style” referring to the renewed Spanish tradition, entered permanently the local tradition promoting a popular and long lasting pattern, alive also today in some ateliers in Cuzco.Paintings with similar iconography are commonly found, just as an example please cfr.
