Description
A.L.S., 2pp. small 4to., Bikini Atoll, July 1, 1946, on USS NEW YORK letterhead, an interesting letter from a member of the U.S. Navy, Ellsworth 'Ellie' E. Eychner, sent on the day of the Able Test, the first test of many in the Marshall Islands and the second U.S. nuclear test from 1946-1958. In part: '...another day and it is able day...and I will be gladden [sic] when it is over...here is an envelope for uncle [?] as he likes collections...she isn't decommissioned yet but she will be...I will be on the p.a. tomorrow. That ship is the scroungiest ship I ever been on and since I been in the navy I been on quite a few...' Besides the time and place of this letter the fact that the U.S.S. New York was one of the ships chosen for the Able and Baker tests, only to survive them both, makes this lot quite fascinating. Mentioned in the letter is an included holograph transmittal envelope from Bikini Atoll with a U.S. Navy Fleet post office stamp. Eychner adds on the envelope 'save to able day' and '2nd test'. The letter has minor folds at the corners and the envelope is lightly toned, else fine.
