Description
(1898 - 1970) French marshal who commanded a Free French Brigade at the Battle of Bir Hakeim, resisting superior German forces for 16 days. In 1944, he was given command of the Free French that participated in the invasion of Normandy, and later was ordered to organize the various Resistance factions and have them concentrate on sabotage. Fine content T.L.S. on his general's letterhead, 1p. 4to., Paris, Feb. 26, 1969 in French to an American admirer. In part: '...Of course, I remember...!...For my part, I do not forget; I will never forget and the only quality that I remember is loyalty. So whatever the things that may tend to separate us, I always consider them to be minor in the presence of this great fact: French-American friendship. For that I will fight until my last breath, as I do my best here so that the cause of the Jews is examined, processed, and solved in a spirit of justice...'. Post-war, Koenig gave his support to the new State of Israel as president of the Franco-Israeli Committee.
