(1898 - 1970) French marshal who commanded a Free French Brigade at the Battle of Bir Hakeim, resisting superior German forces for 16 days. In 1944, he was given command of the Free French that participated in the invasion of Normandy, and later was ordered to organize the various Resistance factions and have them concentrate on sabotage.
