Description
Original political drawings, most of which are political cartoons were prepared by different artists in the early part of the 20th century. All of them at one time were part of the lifelong collection of Gerald E. Czulewicz, Sr. His Uncle Sam collection, sold many years ago was well known and over the y ears had been on various traveling exhibits. 1) Original charcoal drawing by Jonathan Cassell depicting an apparently unhappy Uncle Sam examining the armament industry. The title is “A Belated Inspection” and the image depicts Uncle Sam with a brush in hand viewing down the bore of a cannon. It is signed lower right and appears to be “To Joe Parrish, Compliments of Jno Cassl”. The abbreviation we assume is for the political cartoonist Jonathan Cassell. Housed in a triple matted red, white and blue matte within a simple molded frame under glass. SIZE: Image: 12-1/2” x 12-1/2”. Overall: 22-1/2” x 22-1/2”. 2) Original pen & ink political illustration “Cuba – Go ‘Way. I Don’t Like You” by Alexander J. van Leshout 1901 (1868-1930) depicts a giant figure of Uncle Sam standing on the island looking down at a crying toddler with hat labeled “Cuba” pushing against the leg of Uncle Sam. The U.S. Capital building can be seen in the far distance. “Mr. Wallace Hechtmann 92 La Salle St” in pencil script on the verso along with “No 19 Title “Go ‘Way! Price $15.00” above the artist’s signature in script followed by “Inter Ocean”. SIZE: Work: 19-5/8” x 16-1/4” including margins. 3) A political drawing “H M M M, Looks Like Rain..What Lies Ahead?” depicts hatless figure of Uncle Sam, bombs falling from the sky into his outstretched hand. A political cartoon dealing with America’s need for further protection from threats of military invasion. Artist monogram “L.R”. SIZE: 14-5/8” x 11”. 4) Original pen & ink “Bulletin” by Charles Greenbush (1842-1909) is inscribed lower right “W.C. Nally / Compliments / C.G. Bush” by the artist. A somber illustration of Uncle Sam leaning against a closed door to which is affixed a bulletin. The figure, hat in hands, with downcast expression and closed eyes. Distressed by the content he has read. SIZE: Work: 21-3/8” x 18. 5) John Campbell Corey (1890s-1910s) Labor-Capitol pen & ink cartoon signed “Corey/1901” depicting a haired figure of Uncle Sam standing between two fists. One marked “Labor” and the other case “Capitol” on the cuff of each sleeve. The drawing is dry mounted, hinged on a matte. SIZE: Sheet: 16-1/2” x 16”. Matte: 18” x 22”. 6) Pen & ink “Uncle Sam ‘He Was One of My Greatest Sons” is signed lower right “Harry Murphy 1902” and personalized “To Mr. Holland with my compliments”. The image depicts the figure of a mourning Uncle Sam with hat in hand respectfully regarding the bust of Thomas B. Reed, which is posed on a draped pedestal. SIZE: Image is 16-3/4” x 11-1/2”. Poster is dry mounted on a hinged matte. Condition: CONDITION: All are generally in good condition, there are some stains, wear and imperfections that for the most part can be viewed in the images.
