Bachem (Bele, German artist and illustrator, 1916-2005) Collection of autograph letters signed, postcards signed and original card designs, comprising: c.20 autograph letters and postcards signed to Tom Maschler, containing 7 original illustrations in pen and ink, one with watercolour, 4 original card designs in pen and ink with watercolour, a small group of blank cards with artwork by Bachem, 3 envelopes addressed to Maschler, folds, the odd spot, v.s., c.1960s-80s (c.30)
⁂ One of the few German surrealist illustrators, Bachem was denounced by the Nazis and banned from exhibiting during World War Two. Post war she became an occasional illustrator for Der Simpl, a satirical magazine published in West Berlin. She went on to have a distinguished career as an artist, illustrator and theatre designer. Tom Maschler was a British publisher and writer, noted for instituting the Booker Prize in 1969.
