Phillip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) American, Large Wooden Wall Shelf. Phillip Lloyd Powell is known for his sculptures and cabinetry. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Phillip began making handmade furniture in his family's basement when he was 16 years old. He entered Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) and started a course of study in the Engineering program before being drafted into military service in 1938. During his service, he dreamed of leaving the war behind and returning to New Hope to pursue his passion for furniture making. After he was discharged, Powell threw his energy into furnituredesign. Powell and Paul Evans actually collaborated on pieces together starting in the 1960s. Their collaboration is arguably the most noteworthy alliance in American studio furniture history.
