Description
Scarce vintage matte-finish 5.5 x 3.5 postcard photo of Louis Bleriot in his pilot uniform walking in front of his monoplane during the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne in August 1909, with his assistant, Alfred Leblanc, walking alongside the aircraft, signed by both men in fountain pen, “L. Bleriot” and “A. Leblanc.” In fine condition, with light toning to the corners.
The eight-day aviation event marked the first contest for the prestigious Gordon Bennett Trophy, which was won by American Glenn Curtiss. Despite not winning the trophy, Bleriot and his aircraft showed out impressively, eventually securing the Prix du Tour de Piste (Circuit Prize) for the fastest single lap. Bleriot’s Type XII monoplane won the trophy with a speed of 76.95 km/h (47.8 mph).
