Description
An early 19th century French ormolu and white marble mantel clock
Piolaine a Paris
The signed 4.25 inch enamel Arabic dial with red enamel highlights and signature, with engraved gilt lattice hands, in a cast bezel set within a pedestal surmounted by an armillary sphere flanked by a standing figure reading from an open book, while a younger figure looks on inquisitively, all on a breakfront base with applied frieze on tapering feet. The drum shaped movement with flattened lower edge, later Brocot suspension and outside countwheel striking on a bell. Ticking and striking. 36cms (14ins) high
Footnotes:
Piolaine was a major Paris clockmaker during the last quarter of the 18th and first quarter of the 19th centuries. He became a maître in August 1787, setting up his studio on Rue Ecrivains before moving to Rue Des Gravilliers in 1810. Around 1815 there is no further news of him, but his widow seemed to continue the workshop between 1817 and 1820.
