Description
[Taylor, John.] MONSIEUR TONSON. A NEW VERSION. Philadelphia: Morgan and Yeager, [between 1821 and 1824.] 6.75" x 4.25". Contains 12 hand-colored plates, each with accompanying page of text. In original printed wrappers, recased. ********************* A very rare American hand-colored edition and an attractive juvenile work. The American Antiquarian Society describes this work as "An adaptation for children of the comic narrative poem Monsieur Tonson, by John Taylor (1757-1832). For his authorship see the Dictionary of national biography." It also notes that "Morgan and Yeager published together from 1815 to 1824" and that the work was "probably issued after 1820." Another observation is that the hand-colored plates "might be by William Charles, who worked with Joseph Yeager" but that the title is "not listed in Harry B. Weiss' William Charles: Early caricaturist, engraver and publisher of children's books (1932)." 19th-century signature of Richard H. Downing on verso of frontispiece; most recently in the children's book collection of Albert A. Howard, small bookplate ("AHA") at rear.
