China.- Ortelius (Abraham) Chinae, olim Sinarum regionis, nova descriptio, detailed map centred on China and based on the work of Jorge de Barbuda, a Portuguese Jesuit also known as Ludovicus Georgius, with north oriented to the right and showing part of Indo-China, the Philippines, and Japan, engraving, an excellent bold impression of the second state (of two) with full early hand-colouring, on laid paper with crossed arrows watermark, platemark 365 x 470 mm (14 1/4 x 18 1/2 in), sheet 425 x 530 mm (16 3/4 x 20 7/8 in), German text verso, good margins, some repairs to central vertical fold, fine split in the lower border expertly repaired verso, scattered browning and surface dirt visible in the margins, unframed, 1584 [but slightly later]
