Gomm (Sir William Maynard, army officer, 1784-1875) The Earlier Letters and Journals..., edited by Francis Culling Carr-Gomm, printed title and frontispiece, printed text in galley proof with numerous autograph corrections and crossing out, 271pp., printed on blue paper, bookplate of Francis Culling-Emily Blanche Carr-Gomm on front pastedown, original half calf, gilt coat of arms on upper cover, slightly scratched and marked, corners bumped, upper joint splitting, folio, 1880; and 5 others relating to the The Gomm Heirlooms Act of 1913 and subsequent sale of pictures and silver at Christies in 1914, including the Catalogue of the Gomm Collection of Pictures by Old Masters, printed catalogued marked up with prices, 1914, v.s., v.d. (6).

⁂ Gomm fought variously in Portugal, Waterloo, India etc. and became Governor of Mauritius. Later, he nherited the title of Lord of the Manor of Rotherhithe. Artist's whose works were sold during the sale with prices include Ferdinand Bol (Portrait of a Lady made £2,100), Canaletto (Entrance to the Grand Canal made £220); Rembrandt (Portrait of an Old Man made £950) and William van de Velde (A Fleet at Anchor made £2,500, listed as being bought by Colnaghi).
Gomm held the longest continuous commission in the history of the British Army. Entering the Army as an Ensign in 1794 aged 9, he died in 1875 with the rank of Field Marshal having held his commission for an astonishing 81 years.
